BIOGRAPHY

"Keith Elliott is a painter for whom I have immense respect...
His paintings vibrate like some nightmare underground map."

— Edward Phelps

Bath and Wilts Evening Chronicle, 1973

Keith Elliott (born 1949, Manchester, England) is a British contemporary artist based in France, working within the field of abstract painting.

Education & Early Influences (1966–1973)

Elliott studied at Manchester School of Art (1967–1968) under Gordon Snee, then at Bath Academy of Art (1970–1973) under Keith Arnatt, John Furnival, Adrian Heath, and Michael Kidner — a remarkable constellation of British avant-garde figures.

His formative years were marked by transformative encounters: a contemplative observation of Brâncuși's Endless Column at Târgu Jiu revealed the potential of seriality and vertical rhythm, while his study of Jan van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece deepened his understanding of luminosity and chromatic layering.

Elliott pursued parallel studies in colour theory through Goethe's Theory of Colours and phenomenology through Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception. His thesis, "La main de Vincent," proposed an analysis of Van Gogh's lines combining graphology, biography, and chromatics.

Belgian Period (1973–1980)

In 1973, Elliott received a British Council scholarship to study in Brussels with the abstract artist Jef Verheyen. This period marked the beginning of his research on time, chance, and trance through his series of "circumspect" drawings.

Through Verheyen, Elliott entered the orbit of the ZERO movement, meeting Günther Uecker (1977), Kim Tschang-yeul and Roman Opałka (1978), and Lee Ufan (1980) — sustained dialogues that shaped his conceptual approach to painting.

His first solo exhibition took place in 1975 at Spectrum Gallery, Antwerp. In 1976, the exhibition Outward Journey at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels was organised by the Belgian Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the British Council.

In 1978, Elliott's work was acquired by the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation, and he participated in FIAC Paris and the Actuele Kunstmarkt in Brussels.

The landmark exhibition Webs and Walls (1979) at the Internationaal Cultureel Centrum in Antwerp presented 64 dichromatic panels in a labyrinthine environment, with silk threads extending freely through the gallery space.

France (1980–Present)

Based in France since 1983, Elliott developed the concept of the "Whispering Frame," inspired by quantum physics and the I Ching.

The exhibition Spectroactive (1986) in Angoulême, organised with the support of the French Ministry of Culture, presented the synthesis of his research accompanied by the theoretical text The Process as Corollary of the Dance.

Artistic Technique

The Real Thread

The process begins with the application of silk thread onto a layer of diluted paint placed horizontally. The thread falls in a regular rhythm, gradually becoming impregnated with colour.

Dichromes

After drying, the operation is repeated with different colours. Each thread is soaked in a distinct hue, calibrated with a jeweller's scale. This "dichrome" technique explores the passage between two colours.

The Virtual Thread

The removal of threads instantly reveals underlying colours, creating furrows of pure colour emerging simultaneously on the surface.

Surface as Catalyst

Elliott conceives the pictorial surface as a "catalyst" between three domains: the real (in front), the catalyst (within), and the virtual (behind) — allowing flux between materiality and immateriality.
